1st Annual End of the Year Book Survey - 2013 Edition

best books 2013 end of year survey
The End of Year Book Survey, is a survey Jamie from The Perpetual Page-Turner came up with. This was such fun filling out and I cannot wait to read everyone else's answers, since some of them are really hard and it is seriously heart-breaking to choose! Now let's do the survey!

Best in books 2013

1. Best Book You Read In 2013? (If you have to cheat — you can break it down by genre if you want or 2013 release vs. backlist)
Drum roll......
Contemporary picks: The Fault in our Stars by John Green and as a runner up: Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan

Paranormal: Unbreakable (The Legion #1) by Kami Garcia

Horror: Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion

Adult: The Help by Kathryn Stockett

Non Fiction: The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin

2.Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?
Hands down, Unwind by Neal Shusterman. I was soo looking forward to reading this and it just fell flat....

3. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2013?
(If I have to pick some which I did not write under the 1st question)
Life on the Refrigerator Door by Alice Kuipers and  4 to 16 Characters by Kelly Hourihan

4. Book you read in 2013 that you recommended to people most in 2013?
Definetely The Fault in our Stars by John Green - runner up Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion or The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin

5. Best series you discovered in 2013?
Finished series: Divergent by Veronica Roth (yes, I jumped on the bandwagon kind of late)
Ungoing series: Unbreakable aka The Legion by Kami Garcia

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2013?
John Green... No surprise

7. Best book that was out of your comfort zone or was a new genre for you?
The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin, since its nonfiction and a "biography" (but not really)

 8. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2013?
Unbreakable by Kami Garcia

9. Book You Read In 2013 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?
The Fault in our Stars by John Green.... If I am emotionally prepaired.

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2013?
The Ocean at the End of the Lane

I forced myself not to choose The Fault in our Stars, so this is my pick. The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. I really love this cover and it plays a vital part in the story itself, so that is a plus.

11. Most memorable character in 2013?
Charlie from The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2013?
Either The Fault in our Stars by John Green (yet again) or The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

13. Book that had the greatest impact on you in 2013?
Yes..... The Fault in our Stars.. OR The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky OR Life on the Refrigerator Door by Alice Kuipers

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2013 to finally read?

 15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2013?
Neil Gaiman - The Ocean at the end of the Lane "You don't pass or fail at being a person, dear." ~ Neil Gaiman, The Ocean at the End of the Lane
Since both of them are from the same book, it does not count as cheating.....

16.Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2013?
Shortest: Medea by Euripides (47 pages) (had to read this for school)
Longest: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling (796 pages)

 17. Book That Had A Scene In It That Had You Reeling And Dying To Talk To Somebody About It? (a WTF moment, an epic revelation, a steamy kiss, etc. etc.) Be careful of spoilers!
The ending of Allegiant, none of my friends have read this yet -.-'... Also the "revealing" of what being Divergent actually means and why the world is structured as it is.... It has completely changed the view of the world.

18. Favorite Relationship From A Book You Read In 2013 (be it romantic, friendship, etc).
Friendship / romantic: Gary and Jane from 4 to 16 Characters by Kelly Hourihan (review here) AND Augustus and as he calls her; Hazel Grace from The Fault in our Stars by John Green... You had seen this one coming
Friendsip: Augustus and Isaac from The Fault in our Stars by John Green

19. Favorite Book You Read in 2013 From An Author You’ve Read Previously
The Host by Stephenie Meyer

20. Best Book You Read In 2013 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else:

21. Genre You Read The Most From in 2013?
Horror, since I have read a bunch of zombie books and graphic novels.

22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2013?
Augustus Waters from The Fault in our Stars by John Green

23. Best 2013 debut you read?
Since the only debut I read in 2013 was Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by April Genevieve Tucholke was the only one I read, it would have to be that one - even though I did not really like it.

24. Most vivid world/imagery in a book you read in 2013?
The Divergent series by Veronica Roth. I loved the world of Divergent, I think it was an amazing idea!

25. Book That Was The Most Fun To Read in 2013?
4 to 16 Characters by Kelly Hourihan. I swear I litterally laughed out loud a bunch of times... And people looked at me weird... Because I was never alone when I laughed...

26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2013?
......The Fault in our Stars by John Green

27. Book You Read in 2013 That You Think Got Overlooked This Year Or When It Came Out?
4 to 16 Characters by Kelly Hourihan again, it has been out for nearly a month and on Goodreads it only has 77 ratings, and for that great a book, that is just not a high enough number.

Looking Ahead.....
1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2013 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2014?
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, I have been debating on whether or not to read it, but as soon as I get my paycheck I am going to buy it!
Another choice would be any book by John Green

2. Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2014 (non-debut)?
Unbound (Unbreakable / The Legion #2) by Kami Garcia or the sequel to Warm Bodies

3. 2014 Debut You Are Most Anticipating?
Side Effects May Vary by Julie Murphy

4. Series Ending You Are Most Anticipating in 2014?
Shattered which is the conclusion in the Slated trilogy by Teri Terry

5. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging In 2014?
Write more reviews, find new weekly features to do and be a "good girl" on Netgalley since my feedback ratio is 40% or something.

Reviews of book I have mentioned:
Unbreakable (The Legion #1) by Kami Garcia
4 to 16 Characters by Kelly Hourihan
Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by April Genevieve Tucholke
The Divergent Series by Veronica Roth
